Wasn't that a pretty aged truth, even eight years ago, as much of the country was flipping out over Mrs. Clinton's unabashed counsel with the Mr. ? seems oh, so passe and uncouth. How slowly it came. How suddenly it went. I wonder if Hillary Clinton feels at all gratified that her long struggle is beginning to pay off. I wonder if the name-calling and pooh-poohing and step out of her role as chief tea hostess and cookie baker. Given how smoothly it seems to be going down, Hillary Clinton might not mind the scars she bears from the lashings she's taken over the past eight years. Trailblazers can be mighty forgiving and Rosalynn Carter and Nancy Reagan, for example. Dug in as ever, her detractors may never admit it, but it was Hillary Clinton who finally made it all right for a president or vice president's wife to publicly weigh in settlers, who reap the benefits, who enjoy the full fruits of their forerunner's sacrifice and labor. Perhaps it had to be this way. Maybe Hillary Clinton would have been silly to expect people to embrace her, given that she was ripping out the old guard's hemline. Maybe there was something about the way she did it that Cheney, Tipper Gore and whomever is married to Al Gore's yet-unnamed running mate all owe thank-you notes to Hillary Clinton. Not that they're forthcoming.
