First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton Receives the Prestigious Mother Teresa Award
Washington, DC - - Today, First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton was honored with the Mother
Teresa Award, Albania's highest civilian honor. This rarely granted award was presented to
Mrs. Clinton for her dedication to and actions performed in support of humanitarian relief
efforts. Although this award includes an inscription recognizing the First Lady's efforts in the
Balkans, it also honors her work worldwide in mobilizing humanitarian aid and promoting
human rights.
"I am deeply honored to receive the Mother Teresa Award because it represents the
commitment, the compassion, and the resources that have been brought together to combat the
humanitarian crisis in the Balkans," said First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton. "I am especially
honored that this award bears the name of Mother Teresa, someone who I had the privilege to
know and work with on several occasions, and who dedicated her life to the ideal that peace and
reconciliation can endure over hatred and division."
First Lady of Albania Lidra Mediani presented the award at an event in Skopje, Macedonia,
announcing new public/private efforts to strengthen the economic security to the people of
Macedonia and provide additional relief to the Kosovar refugees. At the urging of Mrs. Clinton,
U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the Liz Claiborne Company and Mercy
Corps International have united to produce clothing for Kosovar refugees while creating jobs in
Macedonia.
The text of the award reads: First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton "has mobilized with her
personal example the solidarity of millions of people throughout the world with the Albanians
expelled from Kosovo, in the spirit of the victory of mankind over inhuman action."

Washington, DC -- On Tuesday, June 22, the First Lady will travel with the President to Skopje,
Macedonia and to Aviano Air Force Base, Italy. In Skopje, the First Lady will participate in an
announcement of new public and private efforts to support the Macedonian apparel and textile
industry and provide clothing for the Kosovar refugees. The First Lady will be joined by
USAID Deputy Director Hattie Babbitt, Liz Claiborne Company Chairman Paul R. Charron, and
representatives from the non-governmental organization Mercy Corps International and the
Macedonian apparel industry.
This event builds on the First Lady's meeting with Macedonian small business leaders in Skopje
on May 14, 1999, when she learned of the U.S. apparel industry's planned reductions of
production at Macedonian factories due to the refugee situation. After the First Lady brought
the situation in Macedonia to the attention of the Liz Claiborne Company, Chairman Paul
Charron volunteered to help sustain the Macedonian garment industry and provide aid to the
Kosovar refugees.

Washington, DC - - On Monday, June 21, First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton will travel with
President Clinton to Slovenia. She will visit the Center for the Rehabilitation of Mine Victims at
the Institute for Rehabilitation, outside of Ljubljana. This state-of-the-art rehabilitation,
prosthetics, and orthopedics center treats patients from Bosnia-Herzegovina. Later in the
afternoon, she will participate in a discussion with prominent women in Slovenia, including
Mayor Viktorija Potocnik of Ljubljana.

Washington, DC -- On Friday, June 18, the First Lady will deliver the commencement address at
Al-Akhawayn University, in Ifrane, Morocco. Mrs. Clinton will be the first recipient of an
honorary degree from Al-Akhawayn University.
In Sicily, the First Lady will deliver the keynote address at the second annual Civitas
International World Congress. Civitas International is a worldwide foundation promoting civic
education and democracy. The conference in Palermo will bring together world leaders from
education and law enforcement, corporations and foundation, to address strengthening
democracy, lawfulness, economic development and peace through increased citizenship
education and participation.
She will also tour one of the sites chosen by the "Schools Adopt-A-Monument - -Palermo Opens
the Gates" project. This five-year old project instills a sense of civic commitment and
community ownership in the schoolchildren of Palermo by allowing them to "adopt" local
monuments, including buildings, parks, fountains and churches which have been abused or
neglected.

Washington, D.C. -- On Thursday, June 17, in Paris, France, First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton
will deliver a major address on encouraging the development of civil society. The First Lady
will be in Paris as part of President Clinton's trip to Europe.
In the afternoon, the First Lady will travel separate from the President to Fes to complete her
tour of Morocco. Due to inclement weather, Mrs. Clinton was unable to make a scheduled visit
to Fes in March 1999, as part of her two-week trip to Egypt, Tunisia and Morocco. Mrs. Clinton
will inaugurate a maternity ward operating room at the Ibn El Khatib Hospital, one of seven
maternity hospitals renovated through the USAID/Morocco Safe Motherhood Initiative. In
addition, she will participate in a roundtable discussion with leaders of local and international
non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
