I hope this letter finds you well.
It has been a year since we last met in Washington, regarding the situation
of women in the Middle East, and the mission of the Middle East Career
Women's Forum. We have enjoyed your insight and assistance before and
in the risk of being presumptuous, I was hoping we could ask for your
advise again.
Since you are well aware of our mission, the ideas behind it and the
current situation in our region, we are sure that only recognition by an
outside dignitary will be able to assist and establish an ongoing program of
cooperation and understanding. Therefore, we were wondering whether
the First Lady has any intention of visiting the Middle East in the n ear
future, and if so could we ask to incorporate in her visit an assembly of all
Forum's members (from all the region, countries and entities).

Today more than ever, we feel that as structured before in other places in
the world, the presence of the First Lady in a regional women's conference
in the Middle East is very much needed and important. The value of such a
conference will be, beside the fact of holding it, a true beginning of
working plan and active ideas to be performed in the coming year. Among
them projects and ideas we discussed before such as the "Mentoring
Program" (by American women), structuring a financial fun and assisting
women in finding other financial resources.
This is a call for help in a struggle I know you think is important and one
we can't give up on.

Philip works as an independent management and marketing consultant

to having been a hospital administrator for 15 years, Philip's work

On behalf of the International Council of Sport Science and Physical Education, I
have the pleasure of inviting you to participate in the closing panel discussion of
the World Summit on Physical Education (Berlin, November 3-5, 1999).
ICSSPE convenes this first ever World Summit on Physical Education to bring
together both government representatives and leading international experts as well
as non-governmental organisations to state the facts on the positive benefits of
physical education and to raise the level of awareness about the increasingly
critical situation of school physical education in many countries of the world. To
this end, we will collect scientific evidence and empirical data on several relevant
aspects, and compile this evidence in a final action plan and strategy document.
Additionally, a number of workshops will take place where relevant topics will be
discussed. You will find more detailed information about this event enclosed
herewith.
The World Summit on Physical Education has received official patronage from the
United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), the
International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Standing Conference of the
Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Länder in the Federal Republic of
Germany. Furthermore, the World Summit on Physical Education is supported by
several national and international organisations, including the Senate of Berlin, the

Thank you for sharing with us the book request from Libet Maloney, a World
Health Organization Volunteer serving in the Caprivi Strip Region of Namibia.
As Tania Vitvitsky and I explained, we are coordinating a large Sabre Foundation
book donation to a Peace Corps project in the Ovamboland Region of Northern
Namibia. With gracious assistance from the US Embassy in Windhoek, and with
Peace Corps funding, we will be able to ship a 20-foot container of books to Walvis
Bay and then approximately seven hours north to near the site of the Oupumako
Library in Ovamboland. A portion of this book shipment will be reserved for Libet
Maloney and her community in the Caprivi Strip.
We have been presented a challenge by recent developments in the Caprivi Strip.
Armed rebel factions who claim the Caprivi, forced the Peace Corps to evacuate all
15 of our volunteers serving in this area. In our opinion, it is not safe to enter the
area. Ms. Maloney, who works for the World Health Organization, chose to remain
in Caprivi. The Peace Corps staff in Namibia have explained to Ms. Maloney that
due to safety risks and budget constraints, we cannot assist with delivering her
portion of the Sabre book donation.
Since we are unable to deliver the books to Ms. Maloney, an appropriate portion of
the donated books will be held for her to pick-up at a future date when the political
situation has changed in the Caprivi Strip. Thank you in advance for sharing this
information with Mrs. Clinton. We will let you know when the donated books are
delivered to Namibia.

Dear First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton:
Amnesty International believes that the nature and extent of sexual abuse in
US prisons and jails shows an urgent need for compliance with international
standards protecting the rights of female prisoners. As a member of Amnesty
International, I am particularly concerned at the practice in federal and state prisons
in the USA. The use of male guards to supervise female inmates is inconsistent with
international standards such as the Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of
Prisoners and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination
Against Women.
Prisoners have just as much right as everyone else to be treated humanely.
In the United States, women are often the victims of prison regimes, which show no
regard for human dignity or for international human rights standards. If you're a
woman prisoner, you may be guarded by male officers who are allowed to touch
every part of your body during searches, and to view you while you are undressed. If
you break disciplinary rules, you may have to spend 22 or more hours a day in your
cell, denied all privacy from the male guards. Across the US, procedures for dealing
with sexual assault by prison staff have often proved ineffective. And if you are
abused, you may be too afraid to speak out if you've seen how guards treat women
who stand up for themselves.
The UN Special Rapporteur on Violence against Women states recommendations
regarding conditions for women in prison that are consistent with the
recommendations made by Amnesty International. I urge the US government and all
relevant federal and state agencies to adopt the recommendations.

missed all the Vital Voices activities so far. I have asked the
Northern Ireland Tourist Board to send you a copy of the tourism
video we talked about and I enclose one I made some years ago to
attract women to industry. I'd be pleased to have it back at

Two things I forgot to mention, is that the planning system in
Northern Ireland holds back retailing, which men don't seem to
see as a serious activity, and if you want to open a small craft
shop off a main road, you can't even put a sign post up.

I am thrilled to tell you that the books donated by the Sabre Foundation
reached northern Namibia today.
As you know, this is the result a two-year community project to build a
library in memory of Peace Corps Volunteer Kyrstin Scharninghausen. The
Kyrstin Scharninghausen Memorial Library was completed last year with
Peace Corps Partnership Program funds. The library will be filled with these
new books - donated by the Sabre Foundation - in the coming week.
The Namibian shipping company, Afrovan, trucked the books to the
Ongwediva Teacher's College near Oupumako yesterday. The books have
been received by community volunteers at the college, who will assist in
stamping and distributing books to the memorial library and other Peace
Corps sites.
Approximately 1,000 books will be held for former Peace Corps Volunteer
Libet Maloney's community in the Caprivi Strip. I will stay in touch to let
you know when she is able to retrieve these books from Oupumako.

Greetings from Silicon Valley, I hope this letter finds you well!
I am writing you with the hope that you will be able to assist me in securing Ellen Lovell's presence
at the upcoming Silicon Valley Arts & Business Awards Luncheon, to be held on Tuesday, March 28,
at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose, California.
This year, we will be presenting a Lifetime Achievement Award to Peter deCourcy Hero,
President/CEO of Community Foundation Silicon Valley. This is the award Harriet Fullbright accepted on
behalf of the President and Mrs. Clinton in 1998. We would like Ellen to participate in this year's Award
presentation to Peter. They are good friends from the many years that Peter served on the National
Council on the Arts.
Peter and Ellen have spoken about her coming out, but without an "official" role to play at the
event, it appears that her White House duties will keep her from attending. Ellen's office is
preparing a letter from the White House for the occasion and it would be wonderful to have her read
it and present it to Peter on the stage at the event.
Having the administration show its strong support for the arts at the event, by having Ellen
participate, will make a lasting impression on the audience which will include some of Silicon Valley's
leading philanthropic, political, civic and cultural leaders. If, indeed, Ellen can attend, you and she
should know that we have secured the funding to underwrite her travel expenses.
I hope you are still enjoying your work at the White House. Thank you for everything you are doing
behind the scenes helping to keep the country and the Clintons going strong.
Anything you can do on this matter would obviously be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your
consideration.
