Brooke Darby (DARBY) SUBJECT: tambo Nancy asked me to fill you in on where we are with the Tambo delegation. As I think I mentioned to you yesterday, U.S. ANC rep. Lindewe Mabuza phoned Flo McAfee in our Public Liaison office early yesterday morning from the home of Mrs. Tambo to suggest that it would be a nice gesture for the US to send a delegation to Tambo's funeral. This contradicted reports from our embassy in South Africa which had indicated that no US delegation would be invited to the funeral and additionally that Mandela is too tired to receive one. Will is checking with State to determine whether any wires got crossed on their end and Nancy called George Moose last night to ask him to track down a final ANC word on the issue. We'll let you know when we hear anything more. On a related topic - FYI - Nancy has ok'd the release of the President's letters to Mrs. Tambo and Mandela to the press by public liaison.
