HUMANITARIAN POINTS
Milosevic has been pushing Kosovars out for over a year -- we
had massive displacement by end of last year -- more than
400,000 had left.
Homes burned, civilians shot and killed, terrible atrocities
that Serb forces perpetrated well before the media reports of
last week.
Long-term Serbian strategy that we have to oppose.
United States has been at the forefront of international
efforts to address the humanitarian needs of persons displaced
within Kosovo and refugees fleeing Kosovo.
To date, contributed estimated $150 million to the
humanitarian relief efforts for the Kosovar Albanians --
Includes $50 million announced by President last week -- aid
to support both civilian, agencies and military efforts -- we
are sending in tents, food, equipment.
NATO is taking a leading role in assisting on humanitarian
front -- and ensuring Macedonia and Albania are not
overwhelmed.
[If asked about taking refugees:
Need for temporary asylum is real -- other Europeans countries
have indicated they are willing to take large numbers
temporarily -- as part of international commitment to provide
temporary safe haven, we will do our fair share.]
