Clinton: $1.2B For Indian Country By Matt Kelley Associated Press Writer Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2000; 5:44 p.m. EST WASHINGTON - President Clinton plans to ask Congress for $1.2 billion in new spending on American Indian programs, including hundreds of millions more to build schools, hire police and improve health care on reservations, a White House aide says. Clinton announced the Indian spending initiative in his State of the Union address last week, but did not include specifics. That plan, to be included next week in Clinton's proposed 2001 budget, includes new or expanded Indian programs in nearly every federal agency, said Lynn Cutler, the president's top adviser on Indian issues. "It's important that we get every agency of the federal government thinking about Indians and employing Indian people," Cutler said Tuesday, a day after she outlined the plan to tribal leaders at a meeting of the United South and Eastern Tribes, which represents 23 tribes from Maine to Texas. Details of the proposal include $300 million to build at least six new reservation schools, $650 million for housing programs, a $117 million increase for reservation road repairs, about $300 million more for the Indian
