To: Harold Ickes
Mac McLarty has asked that I send you this note with a copy to
him.
I would like to urge the creation of Diplomats for Clinton-Gore
to serve as a foreign policy advisory committee for the 1996
campaign.
This group would be composed of former U.S. ambassadors who
have previously served in this or previous administrations. They
would issue statements on foreign policy issues, take full page
advertisements supporting the administration policy and would
also engage in fund raising.
I created a similar group for the Carter-Mondale campaign with
Averill Harriman as chairman. It was very successful and had the
complete support of the Democratic National Committee. I
would volunteer to do the preliminary work again - and suggest
Senator Edward Muskie as Chairman. Members would include
Bob Strauss, Sol Linovitz, George McGhee, David Newsom, Max
Kampelman and others who were career and political appointees.
