Clinton, The President of the United States Executive Office of the President 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue Washington, D.C. 20500 Dear President Clinton: On May 24, 2000 the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians held our Tribal Elections and as a result of those elections we now have a new Tribal Chairman and Three new members on our Tribal Council. This letter is intended as an introduction of our new Tribal Leadership. Our new Tribal Chairman is Robert Kewaygoshkum (Key-way-gosh-come). He is 48 years old. He and his wife Kathy have four grown children and 8 grandchildren. He and his wife served as foster parents for Indian children for many years. Over the last sixteen years Mr. Kewaygoshkum served the Tribe as Fiscal Manager, Tribal Manager, Land Acquisition Manager and Facilities Manager. He served on the Indian Child Welfare Committee and the Tribe's Grievance Committee. He was appointed by the Tribal Council to the Northern Michigan Renewable Energy Board and the Michigan Rural Development Council. He was the Chief Negotiator for the Tribe for several years in self-governance negotiations with both the Department of the Interior and the Indian Health Service. He also negotiated many federal and state grants and contracts for the Tribe in his position as Tribal Manager. Mr. Kewaygoshkum is a traditional dancer and very proud of his culture. He is very dedicated to his Tribe and I believe you will find him to be someone you will enjoy meeting and working with in the future. Leaving our Tribal Council along with Tribal Chairman George Bennett are Lou Scott, Joyce Duford and Helen Paul. Joining Tribal Council members John Concannon, Jaime Barrientoz and Gerald Harter along with Tribal Chairman Robert Kewaygoshkum are new Councilors Thurlow (Sam) McClellan, Ardith (Dodie) Chambers, and Cornelia (Connie) Two Crow. Our new leadership will continue to work on the issues that are important to the Grand Traverse Band such as protecting Tribal Sovereignty, protecting Treaty Rights and asking the federal government to fulfill their trust responsibility to Indian people. I hope you will have an opportunity to meet our new leadership in the near future. Sincerely, John A.Bursey John A.
