Dear Ms. Cutler: On behalf of the members and board of directors of the National Indian Education Association (NIEA), I would like to invite you to speak at our 29th annual convention, which will be held October 11-14, 1998 in Nashville, Tennesse. NIEA is the oldest and largest national organization representing over 2,500 American Indian and Alaska Native educators, school administrators, and students from elementary and secondary tribal and public schools as well as tribal and mainstream post-secondary institutions across the country. Today, educators are being challenged as perhaps never before to find effective ways of preparing American students for the future and to help them overcome tremendous obstacles such abuse, neglect, crime, learning disabilities, poverty, racism, joblessness, and lack of hope. Many of the American Indian and Alaska Native students we represent faces such obstacles daily. Our member educators, school administrators, and parents also deal with the same issues of improving the quality of life and education in their communities as do their counterparts in mainstream America. We would consider it a great honor if you could address our convention attendees to bring them a message of hope and encouragement that their work as teachers, principals, parents, service providers, counselors, and students is important not only to the future of their tribes and communities, but to all of America.
