The Honorable William Jefferson Clinton
President of the United States llouse
United States Capitol
CONFIDENTIAL
Washington, D.C.
DETERMINED TO BE AN ADMINISTRATIVE
RE: San Carlos Apache Tribe - Arizona
MARKING INITIALS: 3 DATE: 6/10/74
Dear Honorable President Clinton:
2024-0541-5
My name is Sandra Rambler, a member of the San Carlos Apache Tribe from
San Carlos, Arizona. Since 1993, I have served on the Native Americans
for Clinton-Gore council. I was personally appointed by then Assistant
Secretary, Ada Deer, along with individuals such as Kevin Gover, who is
now the Assistant Secretary to Secretary of Interior, the Honorable Bruce
Bahbitt.
Our ultimate goal has been to help register as many Native American Indians
as possible to exercise their right to vote in state and national elections
coupled with formulating strategies to keep Indian Country apprised of
your administration's efforts in maintaining the government-to-government
relationship with respect to the sovereign status.
Because of my contacts with the media, Ms. Deer had felt that by
freelancing for seven different newspapers and having radio spots sponsored
here in the Southwest region, I would be an asset to your administration.
In addition, I served as the tribe's Community Press Liaison under the
Stanley Administration. In this capacity, I have done my utmost in helping
provide a positive outlook for your administration and I thank you for
the times you have answered my correspondences. I have had the opportunity
to meet you at least on four different occasions, as follows:
(1) The First Presidential Inauguration of your administration
at the Lincoln Memorial;
(2) The "Inaugural Ball" held at the Kennedy Center;
(3) The White House (through Minority Relations Specialist,
Mrs. Loretta Avent); and
(4) The Arizona State University campaign rally in Tempe, Arizona.
I asked you if you remebered that during your First Presidential Campaign,
a video tape was sent to you from the Arizona Democratic Party where I
had sung an Apache song to you for inspiration. This song was taught
to me by my late elder grandmother and it was a song of strength and
courage which had been sung by Geronimo and Apache Kidd here in the
Southwest. At that time, the media was "dissecting" the First Lady to-
be, which is of course, your beautiful wife Hillary. Yourauswerwas, YES."
to share
Now, I would like my situation with you at the present time and ask for
your utmost attention to this matter. It may be of some surprise to you
that there has been great political turmoil with factions facing both
