Thank you for your letter of May 7th directed to Wayne Gretzky.
Wayne is very positive to the idea of assisting President
Clinton in any of his new and most worthwhile projects. TO this
end, Wayne was optimistic that his hockey schedule would permit
him to visit the White House on May 20th, in between Stanley Cup
playoff games.
Unfortunately, with the new NHL playoff scheduling, it will not
be possible for Wayne to attend The White House to discuss the
President's national service program, and the "Summer of
Service."
We hope that an opportunity will arise once Wayne's hockey
commitments end this season. Please call us at that time - or
earlier if the President and First Lady would like to attend a
Stanley Cup playoff game as Wayne Gretzky's guests.

to discuss our national serivce initiative, including our Summer
of Service program which Phil Caplan and Major Gordon will
present to you later.
I heard on the radio last night, "you're at your best when you're
helping someone else." This is essentially why we are here

America - Eli Segal. Eli is Assistant to the President and

Staff during the campaign and formerly the publisher of GAMES

I have sent a scheduling request to Marcia Hale today. Dawn
Friedkin told me that they are waiting to hear from another group
on that day (possibly astronauts). We need a firm commitment for
Thursday, May 20 which is just two weeks away. The athletes
planning to come to the meeting are expecting to meet with the
President (who has not met with them since before the election).
Many of these people campaigned vigorously for him and need to be
thanked.
I have attached a list of our core working group of athletes
who are willing to work with the young people this summer on
their projects and are willing to participate in the training and
leadership week in June in whatever role we need.
These athletes (and Hammer) are currently involved in
community service projects in their neighborhoods and across
America, including paying the costs for numerous teenagers to go
to college each year in exchange for community service and
staying out of gangs and off drugs.
Eli, I urge you to talk with Marcia to make sure the
President will be able to spend 15 minutes with these people on
May 20 in the Oval Office. It can be anytime between two o'clock
and four o'clock.

SUBJECT: Athletes Meeting with the President on May 20
The scheduling office approved our "athletes meeting" scheduling
request for "normal photo-op time" on Thursday, May 20. Normal
photo-op time is 4:00 - 5:00 p.m. Consequently, the pre-meeting
in the Roosevelt Room is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
I now find out that an American Federation of Teachers reception
has been scheduled on May 20 from 4:00 - 5:00 p.m. Therefore,
photo-ops are being scheduled for 5:00 - 6:00 p.m. that day. I'm
guessing that the President probably will not arrive for the
first photo-op until 5:30 p.m.
It is unrealistic to think that we can entertain these athletes
for 2.5 hours or until the President arrives.
We have several options:
1) The President stops by the Roosevelt Room before going
to the AFT Reception for 10-15 minutes (4:00 - 4:15).
2) The President stops by the Roosevelt Room anytime during
our meeting between 3:00 - 4:00 p.m.
2) Request that we are the first photo-op after the AFT
reception at 5:00 p.m. (which will require changing our
meeting to begin at 3:45 p.m.
Obviously, Phil Caplan and I strongly recommend option one or
two. Another caveat in this mix is the fact that Riddick Bowe's
weigh-in (televised live from D.C.) begins at 6:00 p.m. You
should also know that Riddick will be running with the President
on Tuesday, May 18.

Pursuant to Sinbad's meeting on May 20 with President
Clinton and Eli Segal, the Director of National Service, I am
extremely excited that Sinbad graciously agreed to perform for
our Summer of Service participants at the National Training Week.
The Summer of Service (SOS) is a national program which is
the kickoff for President Clinton's National Service Initiative.
SOS will occur in 10 sites around the country; 1,500 participants
between the ages of 17 - 25 will address the needs of children at
risk in the areas of education, health, public safety and
environmental protection. The program includes a national
training week where all participants will be brought together at
Treasure Island in San Francisco to receive leadership and
service training from June 20 to June 25. This training will
culminate with a closing ceremony on June 24. We are
anticipating that the President will be attending that same
evening, and we'd like Sinbad to perform for 20 to 30 minutes
immediately following the President's speech, or at approximately
8:45 p.m.
I am absolutely delighted about the prospect of having
Sinbad take part in the President's Summer of Service National
Training Week. This will be a rewarding experience for the
participants as they prepare to rebuild our nation's communities.

Riddick Bowe's participation with our Summer of Service
participants at the National Training Week.
As you know, the Summer of Service (SOS) is a national
