What work will be done? What service activities will your participants engage in? Coordinating activities to enhance the development and/or expansion of secondary wood products manufacturing enterprises in 13 counties of Southwest Mississippi. Organizing a Woodworkers Association. Developing a local incentive program to encourage landowners to maintain CRP planted in trees beyond the 10-year contract period. 2. What is the hoped for result of the work/activities described above? Eight secondary wood products enterprises started or expanded. One Woodworkers Association organized, and 95 percent of tree planted CRP acres signed up for incentive program. 3. How will you measure the quality of your produce or impact of your service? Quality of assistance will be measured by evaluation of success of enterprise assisted, as well as number and size of enterprises assisted. Also quality of CRP project will be measured by the degree of participation by landowners. 4. By what standard will you gauge success? Success will be measured by number of enterprises assisted, number of members active in Association, and number of acres signed up for extended incentive program. 5. How many individuals will receive the benefit of the work your participants perform? 300 landowners and 13 enterprises. 27 SCS027-2 CORPORATION FOR NATIONAL SERVICE COMMUNITY SERVICE OBJECTIVE GRANTEE: USDA Soil Conservation Service SITE: Monticello, Mississippi COMPONENTS OF OBJECTIVE STATEMENTS: Evaluation, correction of problems, and the management of livestock waste. 1. What work will be done? What service activities will your participants engage in? Environmental evaluation of livestock waste lagoons. Mechanical pumpout of "problem" lagoons with land application. Support in design and construction of poultry dead-bird composters. Environmental evaluation of storage and disposal of hazardous materials and their containers on farms. 2. What is the hoped for result of the work/activities described above? Ninety percent of lagoon evaluated, 30 livestock waste management plans prepared, 10 lagoons pumped out, 8 dead-bird composters constructed, and 50 environmental evaluation completed. 3. What work will be done? What service activities will your participants engage in? Identifying potential alternative water sources (ponds, lakes, streams, etc.) for rural fire protection and obtaining data to certify sources. Obtaining easement from landowners for access. Coordinating activities with local county government to provide access roads. 2. What is the hoped for result of the work/activities described above? Sufficient sources identified and accessed in 50 percent of the 13 project counties so that 75 percent of all residences are within 3 miles of an approved water supply for fire fighting. 3. How will you measure the quality of your produce or impact of your service? By inspection of selected sites, legal review, and computer analysis. 4. By what standard will you gauge success? 100 percent of selected sources must meet SCS and State Fire Academy Standards. All easements must be reviewed by an attorney and recorded. What work will be done? What service activities will your participants engage in? Coordinating a statewide project to distribute Environmental Adventures booklets to elementary school. Publish monthly newsletter covering AmeriCorps project activities. Develop and maintain computer databases in support of ongoing projets of the local non-profit RC&D Council, including AmeriCorps and other rural develoment activities requiring close networking with participating individuals and community groups. 2. What is the hoped for result of the work/activities described above? All elementary schools in Mississippi to receive educational packages. What work will be done? What service activities will your participants engage in? Coordinating the promoting and solicitation of monitors (volunteers) to adopt stream sections for cleanup and environmental monitoring in cooperation with Mississippi Wildlife Federation's Adopt-A-Stream program. 2. What is the hoped for result of the work/activities described above? The establishment of a water quality database to monitor changes caused by point and nonpoint pollution. 3. How will you measure the quality of your produce or impact of your service? Tests must maintain quality control procedures and must be conducted on specified schedule. 4. By what standard will you gauge success? By number of volunteers recruited (goal-50), miles of streams adopted (goal-100), by number monitoring points established (goal-30), and by number of targeted streams involved. 5. What work will be done? What service activities will your participants engage in? Will advise and organize community officials and leaders to establish goals, priorities, programs, procedures in such areas as the pattern and intensity of land use, transportation facilities, housing, public utilities, public safety, health services, pollution control, and quality of the environment. 2. What is the hoped for result of the work/activities described above? Communities will clearly identify goals and have an organized structure to pursue their priorities. 3. How will you measure the quality of your produce or impact of your service? Before and after assessment of the communities will be done. Various state and federal agencies will be involved in the program. 4. What work will be done? What service activities will your participants engage in? Will assist communities with implementing Empowerment Zone (EZ) and Enterprise Community (EC) action plans. This would include working with community action agencies, Housing Authorities, MACE, and various federal, state, local agencies. 2. What is the hoped for result of the work/activities described above? Inform the public of EZ/EC benefits and assist in organizing local groups to participate. 3. Assess landowner needs for technical assistance in Sharkey and Issaquena counties, including awareness of environmental benefits of restoring marginal cropland to bottomland hardwood forests; awareness of incentive programs; willingness to receive technical assistance. What is the hoped for result of the work/activities described above? Creation of local self directed Ground Water Protection Committees. 3. How will you measure the quality of your product or impact of your service? Members of the Ground Water Protection Committee will include industry, agriculture, institutions, and non-profit organizations. 4. By what standard will you gauge success? The information in Farm*A*Syst is used by local organizations such as the real estate industry to promote the improvement in quality of life for the affected area. 3. How will you measure the quality of your product or impact of your service? One non-governmental group adopts FAS as a tool or promotion effort. 4. By what standard will you gauge success? Farm*A*Syst will have been adopted by the local communities and will continue without an AmeriCorps OHIO SCS 28 7 AmeriCorps USDA Soil Conservation Service Objectives State: - Ohio Number of Objectives - 4 Type of Positions - Rural Development Number of Clusters - 1 Number of worksites - 1 Number of Members - 5 Cluster One Columbus ct) - 28 CORPORATION FOR NATIONAL SERVICE COMMUNITY SERVICE OBJECTIVES 28.06 Grantee: USDA Soil Conservation Service Site: Columbus, Ohio COMPONENTS OF OBJECTIVE STATEMENTS: Two participants will work at the task of keeping field maps (GIS base maps) updated and work in the field to check map accuracy related to the installation of conservation best management practices. They will work with the River Keeper to inventory the tributaries, and Big and Little Darby Creek for riparian cover and identify problem areas where point and nonpoint pollution enters the stream system. 1. What work will be done? A. The participants will update all Darby Watershed Field Maps. B. All maps will be field checked for Map Accuracy. C. The public will be informed of the findings through news releases and 6 public information workshops. 2. What is the hoped for result of the work/activities described above? The result is a current GIS data base and participants that are knowledgeable about field data gathering techniques. The result is a more informed public through interaction of AmeriCorps volunteers with youth, senior, and other groups in the Darby Watershed. 3. How will you measure the quality of your product or impact of your service? The measure of quality is the ability of the participants to submit the data on schedule and to interact with the Darby Service providers in the field. 4. By what standard will you gauge success? The standard to be met is the ability of the students to plan their own schedule, obtain data, identify data collection limitations, plan and schedule information, plan and conduct education activities with other groups, and indicate implementation limitations to their agency mentors. 5. How many individuals will receive the benefit of the work your participants perform? Between 30 and 40 Darby Partners will benefit from having quality, continuous data submitted and accessible for their use. Approximately 1200 watershed farmers will benefit as data will be used to indicate where professional assistance is needed to accomplish the mission. Over 500 children and seniors will be potentially included in education, information outreach programs. 28 CORPORATION FOR NATIONAL SERVICE COMMUNITY SERVICE OBJECTIVES 28.07 Grantee: USDA Soil Conservation Service Site: Columbus, Ohio COMPONENTS OF OBJECTIVE STATEMENTS: Two participants to assist Soil and Water Conservation Districts to do survey and design work for conservation Best Management Practices in the rural areas and to work with county engineers in checking best management practices on urbanizing areas. 1. What work will be done? A. Survey and design 35 BMP's for critical areas that are in the watershed. B. Urban BMP's will be designed and installed on 25% of all subdivisions in the Franklin, Madison and Union county portion of the watershed located on tributaries or the Little and Big Darby Creeks. 2. What is the hoped for result of the work/activities described above? To develop the skills of the project participants so they can provide necessary data for BMP design and to increase the amount of conservation on the land on critical areas in the watershed. 3. How will you measure the quality of your product or impact of your service? The data to be provided will meet the needs of the design staff of the SWCD's and the SCS as outlined by the SCS Standard and Specifications or the Field Office Technical Guide for rural areas and based on erosion regulations in urban settings. 4. By what standard will you gauge success? The standard of success will be the reduction of risk to the Darby Creek as shown by decreasing sediment and pollutants by 75% that were entering the aquatic system of the sites where BMP's were installed. 5. How many individuals will receive the benefit of the work your participants perform? 75 landowners or sites per year. The endangered species in the river also benefit as the water quality is maintained or improved. 28 CORPORATION FOR NATIONAL SERVICE COMMUNITY SERVICE OBJECTIVES 28-08 Grantee: USDA Soil Conservation Service Site: Columbus, Ohio COMPONENTS OF OBJECTIVE STATEMENTS: One participant to assist with T.R.E.E.S.
