was made in 1976 by members of Welcome To
Washington International Club in celebration of the
200th anniversary of the United States of America. It
was the inspiration of Parvane Keith and Maggi Root,
designed by Mary Andrews, under the leadership of
President Jane Hart. The 100 flags represent the native
countries of Welcome To Washington members from
1959 to 1976. The quilt was designed and sewn in ten
months by 69 dedicated women and was intended to be
a permanent reminder of Welcome To Washington's
aspirations of world friendship and peace.

Her musical talents were developed while singing gospel in churches around the country.
Her recording career began in 1945. at the age of 21. During this time.
Washington toured in revue shows. and as a solo artist. She became known for
singing the rhythm and blues and jazz. Dinah Washington
was known as the Queen of the Blues.

Dear Friends,
thanks for all your prayers. My brother Ernst and I had a great time and felt the Lord's
presence in many situations, some of them very difficult. In brief:
In Kenia
. Talks with Stephen Musyoka, Minister Foreign Affairs; Franklin Bett, State House; the
Core Group with James Gitau and the others, including dinner in the presence of Jim Kiels-
meyer and Deb. - President Moi was busy because of the IGADD (Intergovernmental
Authority for Drought and Development) - summit.
- In Nairobi also joint personal and confidential meeting with the Presidents of Sudan and
Uganda, which will be continued. We prayed togather.
- In Nairobi also meeting with General Aidid and prayer.
In Uganda
.. Time with President Museveni, prayer.
- Overnight and time with B.K.and family; great meeting with Mike and Laura and some of
their team; visit German Ambassador.
In Rwanda
- Overnight in the residence of US- Ambassador David Rawson, great time with him and his
wife.
- Time with President Habyarimana and prayer.
- Time with the closest brothers Enoch Rudigiera (who just lost his brother in law, murdered
by terrorists) and Juvenal Renzaho.

In Burundi
Most difficult situation; day and night gunfire and detonations; during the two nights and one
day in Bujumbura more than 50 people were killed in town alone; our friends can hardly
leave their houses.
- Lunch with the new President Cyprien Ntaryamira, his wife and the President of the
Parliament. They asked me to pray, as they are helpless in their situation.
- Dinner in the residence of the German Ambassador with those about seven friends who
could dare to go out this eavening, including Egide and former Prime- Minister Simbomana.
- Several hours talk with former President Bujoja and his wife. Prayer.
I feel that our friends there need us more than ever. Please let me know if you have deeper

Information concerning our latest trip to Africa
Dear friends,
Together with Mr. Tappe M.P. and his wife, Mrs. Brudlewsky M.P., Mrs. Teufel, wife of
our Prime Minister and her daughter, Mrs. Kauder, the wife of the Secretary General of the
Christian Democrats, with my own wife and a few others I have been travelling. During the
time in Rwanda and Uganda and for a one-day-visit in Burundi Mike and Laura Timmis
were part of our delegation. We are grateful for all prayers. The results are like follows:
Kenya:
Fellowship-meeting in the home of James Gitao with Stephen F. Mwangi,
the Major of Nairobi, the German Ambassador and a few friends. We also
met Bishop Kitonga at Redeemed Gospel Church and were able to contribute
to their work there. During Sunday, August 1, 1993 we joined President Moi
visiting the Pentecostal Church in Nairobi with a great service. In the
afternoon we had a special reception through President Moi at State House.
We also saw Stephen Musyoka, our friend, the Foreign Minister of the
country.
Subject of the talks with Stephen Musyoka has mainly been a suggestion of
President Museveni to go forward with a mutual initiative of East African
Presidents concerning Somalia. There appears a possibility that President
Moi, President Museveni and President Zenawi from Ethiopia will take a
mutual step to contribute an African aspect. I am interested in talking with
somebody responsible in the US, as all those Africans are in strong
opposition to the way how General Aidid is presently persecuted. This is the
opinion: Following the reasons which are mentioned to condemn Aidid one
can arrest quite a number of Presidents in Africa and not only from Africa.
Subject of my talks has also been the difficult relationship between the
Presidents of Kenya and Uganda.

Burundi:
Our hosts were mainly former President Buyoya and his wife Sophia.
Together with the MP's and Mike and Laura Timmis 1 also visited the new
President Melchior Ndadaye and some of his closest advisers. We started a
good relationship with him and had prayer together. Next to our old friends
Egide Nkuriyingoma, Nicodemus Nduhirubusa and all the others we met
people from the new cabinet such as the Minister of Defense and a few
others, the new President of the Parliament and the Leader of the opposition.
A visit to the Sisters of Mutumba was also part of our program. It seems that
democracy in Burundi is in a fragile situation. The country needs our prayers
for inner peace.
Rwanda:
President Habyarimana and his wife Agathe hosted us beautifully with a big
feast including dancers and drummers and with many highranking friends and
public dignitaries. A few days ago only the Arusha agreement to finish the
war in Rwanda was signed. The President told us that his final call to the
Rwandese people was a call for prayer and for cleansing their hearts and
repending towards God. Juvenal Renzaho and Enoch Rudigiera have invited
friends and our group to a very inspiring prayer breakfast in our hotel. This
was a great experience for all of us and very moving. We also met orphans,
refugees in a hugh camp and a number of church projects. In Gisenyi, close
to Goma/Zaire, we had a weekend retreat. We spent most of Sunday, August
8, 1993 in the home of Victor and Brigitte Ngzayo in Goma and had a
wonderful time, but also got a deep impression of the very troubled situation
of our friends in Zaire.
Uganda:
This was finally the highlight of our trip. The President and Janet Museveni
have invited our entire delegation to a big reception in the State House
Garden in the presence of the Prime Minister and highest dignitaries of
Uganda as well as the entire diplomatic corps of the country. A military band
was entertaining us. The German Ambassador and many others are still
wandering why in the world a delegation like ours would find such an
attention. Janet Museveni took us up-country and showed us projects for
orphans and for vocational training. A helicopter brought us back to
Kampala. The finish was finally celebrated by a one-day excursion to Queen
Elizabeth Park with the helicopter of the Ugandian Army. We saw many
elephants. Beyond that I had extended time to personals talks with President
Museveni, mainly concerning the initiative for Somalia, his relationship to
President Moi and a visit of President Habyarimana to Kampala before the
end of this month.

Outlook:
President Habyarimana from Rwanda has announced that he is willing to
come to Uganda before the end of this month. He is hereby following a
suggestion which we made to him. The purpose is: After bloody war with
many thousands of victims and one million refugees to open a new page in
the history of the two countries. Prayers for this effort are seriously
requested. We plan to open this state visit with a joined service in Kampala,
with a bishop from Rwanda and a bishop from Uganda preaching.
The participation of Mike and Laura was of a great help. I hope that they can assist me
when I come to Kampala for that meeting of the two Presidents.
