AMERICANS STRONGLY SUPPORT THE EMPLOYMENT NON-
DISCRIMINATION ACT (ENDA) AND EQUAL JOB OPPORTUNITIES
FOR GAY AND LESBIAN PEOPLE
A new national poll by the Tarrance Group (R) and Lake Sosin Snell & Associates (D) shows
that two-thirds of American voters (68 percent), including a solid majority of Republicans
(59 percent), support passage of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA).
Overall, two-thirds (68 percent) of American voters support ENDA, described as a law to
"extend civil rights and prevent job discrimination against gays and lesbians," while one in four
oppose it (25%), and 7% are unsure. More than a third (43%) say that they "strongly" favor ENDA.
Support for ENDA crosses party lines. Among Republicans, a majority (59%) support ENDA
and only a third oppose it (33%), while 8% don't know. Two-thirds of independents (69% favor, 22%
oppose, 9% don't know) and more than three-quarters of Democrats (79% favor, 18% oppose, 4%
don't know) support ENDA. In addition, every region of the country, including the South, strongly
supports ENDA: 77% favor ENDA in the Northeast, with 18% opposed; 71% favor ENDA in the
Midwest, with 25% opposed; 68% favor ENDA in the West, with 24% opposed; and 62% favor
ENDA in the South, with 28% opposed.
Furthermore, 80% of the American public says that homosexuals should have equal rights in
terms of job opportunities, while just 14% say they should not. This support for equal rights crosses
party lines: three-quarters of Republicans (75%) and 84% of independents, as well as 84% of
Democrats support equal rights in terms of job opportunities for homosexuals. Moreover, support for
equal job opportunities for homosexuals is strong in every region of the country, including 83% in the
Northeast, 82% in the Midwest, 84% in the West, and 74% in the South.
This memorandum reports the findings from a national survey of 1,000 adults who indicated they are registered to vote,
conducted April 8-10, 1997, by The Tarrance Group and Lake Sosin Snell & Associates. The overall margin of error is ±3.1
percent.
