NAMES PROJECT Memoria National Capital Area President and Mrs. Bill Clinton The White House Washington, DC Delivered by hand to Marcia Scott April 25, 1996 Dear President and Mrs. Clinton, I am writing to ask you to join with the Gores as Co-Chairs of the Honorary Host Committee for the October 11-13, 1996 display of the entire AIDS Memorial Quilt in Washington, DC. The three-day display will be the largest AIDS awareness event in history, bringing 750,000 people to Washington to view the 30 acres of Quilt laid out from the steps of the Capitol to the base of the Washington Monument. The event will provide a crucial focal point for national and international visibility for AIDS issues. By having the President and Vice President of the United States and their spouses co- chair the Honorary Host Committee we hope to demonstrate that AIDS crosses all boundaries. By agreeing to co-chair the event, you can also demonstrate your personal commitment to fighting AIDS and help unite our country in a battle against a common enemy. As Honorary Co-Chairs of the event, you would be the first readers of names during the unfolding ceremony at 8 a.m. Friday October 11, 1996. The unfolding ceremony will be broadcast live via the national morning news shows. Thank you for considering this request, and thank you for all you are doing to help bring an end to the AIDS pandemic. Sincerely, Wille Sam Michael J.
