MEMORANDUM FOR WHITE HOUSE ADVANCE OFFICE AND TRAVELLING STAFF

SUBJECT:
Travel Advisory for Indonesia and the Philippines
The following immunizations are required for travel to the
Orient:
Typhoid -- oral regimen: good for 5 years
vaccine:
good for 3 years
Gamma Globulin --
good for 90 days
Medical Risks and Preventive Measures:
Sun Exposure: It is advisable to use sun screen, wear wide-
brimmed hats, and wear sunglasses.
Heat related illnesses: The best prevention against these
illnesses is to maintain adequate hydration. During periods
of strenuous activities a liter of water each hour may be
required. Avoid antihistamines, caffeine, and alcohol.
Please report all febrile illnesses to the trip Medical
Officer.
Schistosomiasis: This parasitic disease is carried by fresh
water snail parasites that can penetrate the unbroken skin
of humans who are exposed to fresh water (e.g. lakes and
rivers). Avoid swimming and wading.
Food and Water: All water and ice sources should be
considered contaminated. Traveller's diarrhea affects up to
50% of travellers. The best prevention centers on avoiding:
(1) raw vegetables (e.g. lettuce and salads) and fruits, (2)
raw or rare meat, fish, or shellfish, (3) unpasteurized milk
or dairy products, (4) foods purchased from vendors, and (5)
foods that have not been fully cooked and are not steaming
hot. Avoid intake of water from the faucet and ice.
Remember to rinse your toothbrush with bottled water only.
