good workout. Our Fourth of July lunch was a magnificent feast. A ham cooked by Larry Gould was delicious, with spinach, potatoes, bis- cuits, strawberry jam, prunes, dates, candies, and cigars, the table looked royal. Slept all afternoon. After supper took the wheel for another half hour. The ice getting thicker all the time, finally closed in--about 9 PM-- and we were beset. The ice was tight to the ship and extended with no break in all directions. The fog lifted some and we saw Cape Chiddey and the Button Islands, where we were day before yesterday. Efidently drifted back in the ice all day and yesterday and just made it up. Ran about on the ice with Rufus and Henry until after midnight. The ice in massive, irregular blocks, some white or brown with dirt, and iridescent blue, are always in motion, churning and grinding round one an- other. Lots of practice at runs- a run consisting of several small cakes incapable of carrying our weight but which serve as stepping stones if used with speed and good judgment. It is al- most demned foolishness with the water at 29° and infinitely deep so far as we are concerned; but I am still dry. Turned in at 12:30. As I lay in my bunk, I could hear the ice grating along the side of the ship, less than a foot from me! This has been,
