the rest apparently purchased from H.B.C. Posts. The sealskins were
just stretched and dried and the hair left on them except on two
skins, one in each side of the tent, which were scraped very thin and al-

of the tents are just as always described. Across one end is a
large heap of caribou skins (took-too) where they all sleep. Piled

clothing, food, and sewing materials stuck in old cracker boxes and
sacks. The stove is a large bowl of soapstone on stone legs about
six inches high; in this is a small puddle of oil, which is always
burning under a pot or pan of some kind. Everything is black and
greasy beyond description. Most amazing of all is a box about two
feet square and a foot or so deep, filled with seal meat in all
stages of decay. This is their main food and there are usually
several bloody knives stuck in among the fat and meat; the box
itself is smear ed with blood, which has collected lots of hair from
the garments and has turned black with age.
Every tent has an alarm clock or two, and a great many
have accordians on which they can play tunes such as "Yankee Doodle"
and "Marching through Georgia" And how they love to dance ! As

laughing and shouting at the top of their lungs. Everyone from the
