side and on the other, the dull gray and green of Baffin Island's
barren rocks and muskeg grass and moss. What better way to spend
an afternoon than sleeping under such conditions? And sleep I did
all afternoon and that night too, under the combination sunrise and
sunset, the full moon and bright stars.
AUGUST 19- Friday
8:30 PM: On the 16th, we left the shore (Camp Walcott)
on foot, G.P., Larry, Dave, Avalooshak and I packing inland to in-
vestigate the country and some very high looking mesas we have seen
from on shore. Two days- one over rough rocks and moss, the other
over a flat prairie of wet grass, where half the going was good and
the other half bad, letting us down to our knees in mud- brought
us within a couple of miles of these curiously unnatural looking
eminences in this otherwise entirely flat land.
Yesterday, the Director, Larry and I, without packs,
walked to the top of the highlands. They are of Silurian limestone
and abound in fossils which help identify the period of the rocks.
The top is very flat and dry; muddy gravel makes up the surface.
It is more like Arizona and New Mexico there than any other place
this side of those states. We passed over four good sized canyons
in the limestone, which were named as we went- by the Director's
choice and are to be on the map- Andrews (after Roy Chapman Andrews)
