all off those Palmer packs on this last walk. The chief hardship
of this month's trip is the dirt. I am really getting so dirty I
hate myself, but there is little chance to wash and no chance at
all to take off any clothes and wash them, because I hafe no
others along to put on, and would freeze anyway. I hope to pull
through, however, and what a luxury the MORRISSEY will seem:
George and Barney have just started out on an all day
walk, as they have been sitting in camp while we packed inland.
(7:00 PM:)
They have just now returned from their expedition
and, to their own surprise as much as anyone's else, they have
brought in two caribou. One is a very nice head and the other
George blew to pieces with my 30:06. Avalisha is greatly amused
by the way they have been skinned, as neither Barney nor George
has ever even seen an animal skinned before. They are an odd sight,
but the skins are beautiful--what there is of them. George has
never killed anything before- nor hunted at all- so he is well
satisfied.
This is a lovely peaceful evening in Camp Walcott, and
the sun is about to set under the edge of heavy clouds. Tomorrow
we move on, and God only knows when we will rest again- until we
see the MORRISSEY, or at best, Cape Dorchester.
