islands off the Labrador coast. Snowy hills on the horizon and the
islands very rocky and barren. Some houses on some of them, said to
be used by summer fishermen from Newfoundland. The sea full of
icebergs and floating ice- beautiful in the different phases of the
sunlight. Pass very near islands about noon, then out into the open
where the breeze comes up. A large solid ice floe off to starboard -
we are lucky to be inside of it. At evening we are very near the
floe. Pieces of ice have most delicate shades of green and blue all
through them- nothing quite so lovely anywhere. Stiff breeze up
and we tear along about eight, but probably shall be stopped by ice
before morning. White glare, low in the sky ahead, indicates great
ice fields.
JUNE 26- Sunday
Day calm and dark. Met the BEOTHIC, Hudson Bay Company
ship, southbound , about 5 AM. This was as far as she could go.
Reported solid ice above this point. Thick ice pans and small bergs
in a black sea all morning. A stiff S.W. wind blowing all the time.
Spent an hour at the wheel- hard work swinging her all the way from
one side to the other almost as fast as you can. Got a good workout.
Passed Cape Harrison about noon, then turned back inside Ragged Is.
by solid ice. Worked around outside and into fairly open water.
Evening sailing in clear water inside of islands with snow capped
