arrived at Turnavik about 3:30. A little deserted fishing village,
with a remarkable harbor for shelter and depth. Started in 1880 by
Captain Bob's grandfather and for a long time a very prosperous
place, inhabited by as many as three hundred people. The old care-
taker and his wife, hired by the Bartletts for ty years ago, just
died this spring, and the f ew other people very recently moved out.
We went through the old store and fish houses- a very sad place,
and especially so to the skipper and Will, who told many incidents
of the summers they had spent there.
Left Turnavik about 5 0' clock and on up the coast. Were
forced in among the islands again by solid ice outside. Water per-
fectly calm all evening as we headed toward the islands and the sun-
set beautiful as ever, with fewer clouds this time. Many seals are
swimming about. We see their heads and then they duck as they get
sight of us. Two hours after supper in the crow's nest were very
quiet and peaceful, but in the end too cold.
JUNE 28- Tuesday
In the Hopedale harbor at early morning. The Moravian
Mission and Hudson Bay Post- a quiet little place, looking much
like Mokkovik. Did not go ashore. We left about 8 o' clock and
moved up along the rocky coast through lots of thick ice. A beau-
tiful, calm day, and very warm. The launch went over and we went
