NATIONAL ARCHIVES MICROFILM PUBLICATIONS The telegrams sent by McClellan and his staff in vol- umes 97-105 are typed copies made by the War Records Office in 1896 from originals in the possession of McClellan. Although all of the nine volumes in this series chronologi- cally overlap, they do not duplicate each other. Many of the telegrams in volume 102 are considerably out of chronological order. Volume 106 contains for the period of March 1-10, 1862, telegrams sent by McClellan and his staff from his headquarters as General in Chief and from his headquar- ters of the Army of the Potomac; for the period of Sep- tember 1-8, telegrams sent chiefly to subordinate com- mands of the defenses of Washington and the Army of the Potomac; and for the period September 8-16 and October 16, telegrams sent mainly by Gen. Nathaniel P. Banks and his staff to McClellan's field headquarters and to sub- ordinate commands in the Washington area, including tele- grams to Gen. Samuel P. Heintzelman's command of the defenses around Washington. Also included are a few tele- grams sent by McClellan's staff. Most of the telegrams sent by McClellan in volume 107 were to General Halleck, but some are to the President, the Secretary of War, heads of War Department bureaus, subordinate generals of the Army of the Potomac, and others. The volume has three sets of page numbers as follows: 1-19; 1-478; and 1-59. There is an index only for the last 59 pages. This index is at the back of the vol- ume, but for the convenience of the user it has been filmed in front of the volume. The telegrams received by McClellan in volume 108 are mainly from Halleck, but there are several original tele- grams from Stanton (missing from the series of telegrams sent by the Secretary of War) and a few from other Wash- ington officials. The first 3 pages and about 20 other scat- tered pages are missing from the volume. On pages 1-5 of volume 109 are six telegrams to McClellan dated March 2, 3, and 16, 1862. The telegrams dated September 1-7, 1862, are those received by McClellan and his staff but include some received by him and his chief of staff from their headquarters when they were away. The rest of the telegrams in the volume are mainly those received by General Banks or General xi NATIONAL ARCHIVES MICROFILM PUBLICATIONS
