/ Circular War Department Dec.,23,1833 Sir It is desirable to ascertain all the facts which can be collected concerning the singular/mitioniv ap pearances which were so extensively observed throughout the Union on the night of the 13 November last. I have therefore to request that you would procure the statements of such persons at the post under your command as may have observed this phenomenon, and embody the result in a report exhibiting the following facts: T... the commincement and termination of then appear. =ances. 2. The course and strength of the wind, and the states of the atmosphere whether clear or cloudy. 3. The temperature by the thermometer, and wright of the atmosphere by the barometer and the effect upon the magnetic nudle, if these particulars are known. 4 An to and from what quaters of meteors passed; and the impressions left on the minds of different spectation. 5. Were these appearances attended by any moise? Ia am satisfied you will find, in the advance ment of science, a sufficient motive for your attention to this subject and for the collection of such materials most extraordinary phenomena which has appeared as may be useful in the investigation of one of the in modern times.
