Washington October 26th 1833.
"aftheat is the office of the Adjus
lant General of the United States Army as
established at the seat of Government ,"
st may be answered, in part; That
the Adjustant generals office is the depository
of all the Records of the War office, which
refer to the personal of the Army, in War
and in peace, and of the Military history of
every officer and aoldier (or ought to be.) from
the earliest period of the government, as far
as these may have escaped two conflagrations,
or may otherwise have been preserved :-

It is in this office where all the
monthly Returns and Muster Rolls are re-
ceived and preserved for the Mar Depart
ment, and enjoined by the 13th 19th article of
the Rules and Articles of War

Where the "original proceeding." of
Courts Martials which the law requires should
be forwarded to and preserved by the Secretary
of War are deposited and entered

Where the inventories of the effects of
diseased officers and Soldiers are received and
recorded, according to the 90 94th 890. articles
of War :

Where are received consolidated
and preserved the annual returns of the
Militia of the United States.

of Resignations, Deaths and all
