In the foreground to the left is a road along which a woman advances with a basket on her arm. Below the road lies the Cuckmere Valley ; on a low hill beyond it stands the village, with a low wooden spire in the midst of trees. Before the signature ; before two bushes which stand up near the right side on the level of the village. Three lines slanting from left to right, 47-58 mm. from the left side and near the bottom of the plate, stand alone.

In the foreground is the narrow branch of the Itchen which runs parallel with the foot-path to St. Cross. A willow growing on the right bank of the stream spreads its branches on both sides across the plate. In a space below the branches on the right we see the distant nave and tower of Winchester Cathedral.

An unfinished sketch taken from the slopes of St. Catherine's Hill. The embankment of the Great Western line to Southampton is seen in the middle distance ; beyond it, to the left, the slopes of St. Giles's Hill ; near the middle of the plate the Guildhall tower ; then, to the right, the Cathedral, the tower of the College Chapel, and the spire of St. Thomas's Church, which would appear, in nature, on the extreme left.

In the foreground is the Norrström, in which float six boats, each carrying a round floating net; they are moored to the wall of the Strömparterren (a public garden) on Helgeandsholmen. People lean on the rails, watching the fishing-boats. Two poplars sway in the wind towards the left. In between the trees is seen a fountain, with a statue rising from its center. Beyond a bridge (Norrbro) is the Opera House, the facade of which is brilliantly lighted. Night effect, with black stormy sky. Topographically incorrect, the subject being shown in reverse from the trial plate, which was true to nature. The two men standing in the sixth boat are black. The water, trees and fountain are more finished. There is slight additional horizontal shading on the white part of the wall. There are many light dry-point marks on the left margin, arid one similar group near the foot of the plate on the right. With five vertical strokes extended into the white patch but before the signature.

On the left the town hall with an Elizabethan gable, its doorway surmounted by a coat-of-arms, is approached by steps. In front of this building is a modern Gothic fountain with the word ERECTED, round which several people stand; one of them carries a picture. In the background is the Bull Hotel, and, on the right, houses, of which has three sharp gables.

Yorkshire smithy

Buildings, partly overhung by trees, occupy the left half of the composition. Near the door of the smithy are a horse and cart and three men. On the right are fields sloping upwards to the back. The sketch was made near Wakefield. The detached lines in the sky are entirely effaced ; the main body of the rain lines is much reduced, and the traces of foliage have almost wholly disappeared.
