Source Description
Before we had computers that are capable of displaying billions of colors, some of the earliest machine-generated maps came from typewriters! In this typewriter-style map of the population of Massachusetts, each typed character represents a 5 square kilometer cell (well, technically a 2.5-minute cell), with heavier characters, like the @ sign, showing denser populations.
