Carter and Andrews built this Barnes Court tenants' house in 1832, just two years before the publishing company failed. This photograph shows the house as it looked in 1963. Ruth Evans, who owned it at the time, stands to the left of the front door.
Completed in 1995, this imposing contemporary facility on Prescott Street was made possible through the generosity of Chinese philanthropist Chan Shun. The main dining area has a seating capacity of 300, and other function rooms include a special president's dining room.
This showy Victorian house was built about 1860 by Daniel Goss and was later occupied by Mrs. Charles R. Chant. It was originally located on Main Street in South Lancaster. To make way for Preston Hall in the 1940s, it was purchased and moved back toward Orchard Street. The building has since been used as a music department and as a dormitory. It was reportedly the first prefabricated house in Lancaster.
Located on Neck Road near the end of Packard Street, this Queen Anne-style house was built to be occupied by Charles Latham and his new bride, Lydia S. Frost. The couple was married in Lancaster by Rev. G. M. Bartol in September 1886, and their new home was finished in October of that year. Latham operated a poultry farm and was said to be well known among dealers in fancy birds.
This early view down Main Street shows the Immaculate Conception Church (left) and the Evangelical Congregational Church (center) as they appeared in the 1890s. Both buildings were subsequently destroyed by fire (in 1941 and 1950, respectively) and then rebuilt.

No less than 181 Lancaster men served in the Civil War.
Col. John E. Thayer (1861-1933) was one of twin boys born to Nathaniel Thayer II and Cornelia van Rensselaer Thayer. The longest surviving of the four brothers who maintained estates in the town, he is perhaps best known for his vast collection of North American bird specimens. Thayer's interests were broad and, in addition, he raised a variety of dog breeds and harness horses at his Maplehurst Stock Farm. He took an active interest in town affairs, serving as selectman and tree warden for many years.
In the early years, the buildings for Atlantic Union College were on two separate tracts of land with a garden tract between owned by someone else. In the early 1930s, college president Otto John finally persuaded the owner to sell, making way for E. Edgar Miles Hall. Shown here is the new sidewalk, 600 feet long, from Prescott Street to the steps of what was then the Academy Building. The campus was finally connected.
