Cook Conservation Area

In 1977, the Lancaster Conservation Commission installed a sign for the North Greenway area on Lunenburg Road. It was named for George Cook Jr. of Leominster, who had donated 104 acres of land on both sides of the river and extending about one mile along the banks. The Cook Conservation Area and Lancaster State Forest now consist of about 800 acres, with six miles of trails along the North Branch of the Nashua River.

Crownledge

Eugene V.R. Thayer II was the only member of the fourth generation to build an estate in Lancaster. Plans for Crownledge, as the estate was known, were drawn up by the architectural firm of Wadsworth and Bigelow in 1908. (Henry Forbes Bigelow, grand-nephew of the carpet loom inventor Erastus Bigelow, was well known to the family and, in fact, soon married Thayer's sister Susan.) Interior design for the $200,000 house was most likely done by Ogden Codman, who was frequently commissioned by the Thayer family to work on its homes in Boston, Lancaster, and Newport. Today, the mansion, located on Langen Road, is a private preparatory school called the Trivium.

After Eugene V. R. Thayer II married Gladys Brooks in a lavish Newport wedding in 1903, the young couple decided to build a country home in Lancaster. Plans for the $200,000 estate were done by the Boston firm of Winslow and Bigelow. Henry Forbes Bigelow was well known to the family, as he had recently completed work on the Col. J. E. Thayer's Bird Museum and would soon marry Eugene V. R. Thayer's sister Susan.

Crownledge living room

This well-furnished living room featured carving over the mantel that was similar to that in the children's room of the Thayer Memorial Library. It is thought to be the work of Dutch-born wood carver Grinling Gibbons.

Deershorn name

The name "Deershorn" (pronounced deers horn) came into use after a large horned animal was shot by 16-year-old settler Jonas Fairbanks around 1800. The horns were posted at a place called Sly's Corner, where the two roads to Sterling separate. After marking the spot for nearly a century the lichen-covered horns were taken to the town's Memorial Hall for preservation. The famous 12-point horns, actually those of an elk, are shown here.
