Title from item.
A memorial book of soldiers, who claimed Wayland MA as their residence when they enlisted, was published. The soldiers may have been born in Wayland or nearby towns of Framingham, Natick, Sudbury or Weston while others were born in Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Germany, England or Ireland. Included are 2 soldiers from Wayland but whose service was accredited to other places. Due to the tardiness of gathering the material, the preface apologizes for the “efforts less satisfactory than could have been desired.” The veterans provided personal experiences of their service. Battles were recreated, prison endurances shared, loss of life detailed and desertion disclosed. Genealogical information is provided. The appendix includes the notes of first war-meeting, the military company, Soldiers’ Aid Society, Soldiers Relief Society, bounty-money amount spent, money raised, state aid received and the reception for the soldiers, July 4, 1865. A chronological record of the principal battles and engagements in which the Wayland soldiers participated is listed.
Additional names: Draper, Frank Winthrop, 1843-; Green, George W.; Mason, William A.; Murphy, Michael, 1833-; Sullivan, Michael; Wilcox, John.
