Erving Hermit, John Smith
John Smith lived in a cave and later in a shack on a mountain just west of Erving Center. Smith walked into town quite frequently and entertained many visitors before he died in 1900 at the age of 81. His grave and that of his cat are in the Erving Center Cemetery.
