Document source description
Small leather bound commonplace book that belonged to the Rev. Seaborn Cotton of Hampton, N.H., to his son and successor, the Rev. John Cotton, and to the latter's son-in-law and successor, the Rev. Nathaniel Gookin. Entries include copies of songs, ballads, and prose extracts written while Seaborn was in college (1648-1651) as well as church records (including meetings, admissions, list of members, baptisms, etc.) written while minister in Hampton. Includes Seaborn Cotton's family records and John Cotton's family records 1687-1710 followed by misc. family records 1710-1752. Book also includes Hampton church records written by John Cotton and some ballads, poetry and astrological entries by "D.C." -- perhaps Seaborn's wife Dorothy (Bradstreet) Cotton. The second half of the volume (pages 117-193) originally started at the back of the book and worked toward the middle (written upside down). The pages have since been disbound and are presented here in their logical order. Blank pages have not been scanned.
