They write that they have been appointed by the National Freedmen's Relief Association to arrange a course of lectures to \"raise money to replenish the exhausted treasury of our society\" and \"to offer the public an opportunity to listen to the discussion of the great themes of the day by the ablest minds.\" They also mention that similar requests have been made to Ralph Waldo Emerson, Wendell Phillips, Horace Greeley, Frederick Douglass, and others.",
