Letter from Richard Davis Webb to Mary Anne Estlin, 1851 July 20
Richard Davis Webb writes to [Mary Anne Estlin] in regards to standing straight in "the Weston sense." He discusses people's narrowness and bigotry but does not see their dishonesty. He asks if he should force cooperation with the American society upon those who "abhor slavery very sincerely, though they stumble at Garrison." He continues and says they know "his opinions, my associates, my preferences-and in the Standard they see my letters which I was amazed how they put up with as they do." He refers to "this everlasting Wigham affair" and he "pleads with Miss [Caroline] Weston "if she goes to Scotland to hide her thunder." He remarks on the "cloud of Bigotry that spreads over the whole country."
