Document source description
In this letter to Samuel May, J.S. Stafford tells May of the efforts of abolitionists in Cummington to hold a meeting on July 4th, saying that they all "seemed to think that no pains or expense ought to be spaired [sic]" to hold the meeting. Stafford discusses the role of the church in supporting slavery, stating, "that of all the pro-slavery influences which is most to be lamented is the pro-slavery influence of the Church and Clergy. Tis over all, pervades all, invades all ..." He tells May that they are failing in planning for the meeting because "there is no heart for it here yet even its defeat will do some good here."
