Source Description
Harriet Beecher Stowe writes to Mr. Phillips of Phillips, Sampson & Company in regards to her publishing deadline for her next anti-slavery novel "Dred." She writes, "Between now & the 30th are only about 12 working days-I cannot calculate on producing more than 20 pages of manuscript a day." She requests a half a dozen more bottles of Catawba to "support the hot weather & the long pull." A second letter is written Monday morning by Calvin Ellis Stowe requesting more time to finish the novel and dividing it into two volumes.

There is no year on this manuscript, however, Harriet is discussing the publishing deadline for her next book, Dred, which was published in August of 1856, so I have deduced that this was written in July of 1856.
Included is an engraving of Harriet Beecher Stowe by T. Johnson from a photograph by Sarony.
