The black abolitionist William G. Allen tells of the persecution and heroism of his white wife, Mary King Allen: "The last B & F Reporter contains a very faithful account of our difficulties. Of course many things could not be told. The persecutions & sufferings endured by Miss King (that was) were they told (persecutions inflicted by the hand of her family & friends) would fill even a heathen with indignation. A more heroic young lady, America has not produced. She counted the cost from the beginning & therein lies the heroism."
