        "Maria Weston Chapman writes about family business affairs. Chapman says: \"I saw by the papers that the row was a very tame affair, looked to me like a wrestling match.\" Business is flourishing. \"We shall lose about $16000, a flea compared to most people.\" An old Scotchman named George Smith, for whom Chapman had invested nearly a million dollars within the month, complimented her on her skillful purchasing; she now has the \"whole control of the stock department.\" There is no chance of dissolution [of the Union?] just yet. Stocks only rose ten per cent. She contrasts the former attitude of the South with the present; now they must sell at a loss, for they must have dollars to buy food. \"I look for insurrection within the month.\" She describes the health and beauty of the little boy [perhaps a grandchild] with her."
