        "Maria Weston Chapman writes that Caroline Weston and Mary Chapman visited Ann and Wendell Phillips in Lynn and Nahant. Edmund Quincy has written \"a sort of apostolic letter to the Ripley Community\" [Brook Farm] inviting them to a picnic. \"Theodore Parker too is expected.\" [George W.F.?] Mellen spent the evening. Parkman Blake called. And Mr. Beane called \"about getting Anne to supply Abby [Osgood's] place.\" Dr. Gay has gone to Europe, and his place is taken by Dr. Ware, who has a \"reputation in lung complaints.\" He has given Henry G. Chapman a mixture containing opium, which has \"alleviated every bad symptom,\" but which nevertheless fills Maria with horror. Maria concludes the letter by commenting: \"I am afraid you will see reason to think Henry has failed very much.\"",
