William Lloyd Garrison arrived in Rochester last night and was met by Isaac Post and Aaron M. Powell. He was driven to Susan B. Anthony's country residence. Powell has been here for seven weeks preaching in the Unitarian church. Garrison's lecture in Cleveland was "almost a failure"; no more than 150 people were present. There has been continuous rain, mild weather, and fog. Alonzo Eliot Newton, editor of the New England Spiritualist, was in the audience listening to Garrison. Today, Ira Stout is to be executed for murder. Garrison writes: "Military companies are ordered out to prevent a rescue, but this is ridiculous, as all the ruffianism in the city is clamorous for the hanging of Stout." Garrison will dine with Samuel Joseph May on his way to Cortland and then return to Syracuse to lecture.
