Document source description
Estlin offers consolation for the death of May's father-in-law, Nathaniel P. Russell. He asks May what he meant when he said that "an election by the people will be prevented." Estlin says that it is difficult for the English to help the Irish so long as the Irish will not help themselves. He belittles the Chartist disturbances and condemns the activities of the French politicians. Estlin mentions the abolitionists' reputation for intolerance and inquires as to how many abolitionists refuse to vote on the ground of conscience. He describes William Henry Ashurst and Ashurst's family and says that Frederick Douglass complains to Mary Carpenter of the coldness of his Bristol friends. Estlin states that hydrotherapy is beneficial when properly managed.
