Bringing in the wounded

From "War Memories" catalog: This is a view of Allsop's house near Spottsylvania Court House, May 12, 1864. The barn is used as a field hospital, and in the foreground is a wounded soldier on a stretcher, who is being brought in from the field of battle; his comrades have stopped a moment, and the stretcher is placed on the ground; they are waiting orders from the surgeons to bring in the wounded man. The empty stretcher on the ground a little nearer the barn door tells the story of another wounded man on the operating table; and so each one must take his turn under the surgeon's knife.
