George Louis Hemenway is seated at a large table/desk in his office. There is a coal stove with a attached ornament on top, connected to a stove pipe running up and into the wall behind it. A bookcase to the right of the stove contains five shelves full of sets of legal books. The top of the bookcase holds more books and a scroll of paper. A closed door cabinet forms the bottom of the bookcase, with papers and books on the overhang. Three wood-framed windows with blinds pulled halfway down are visible. Hemenway is sitting at a large table on one of a set of Windsor chairs, and is reading a document in his hands. He has a walrus moustache, dark shoes and is wearing a shirt under a light colored suit. As well as the bookshelf, a small document cabinet and rocking chair can be found behind Hemenway, the former holding a feather duster and papers on top, and another stack of papers on its side. Hemenway is sitting in front of an early-model typewriter, with a skeletal design and its case behind it. To the right of the case is what appears to be a law book on a piece of paper. On the far end of the table is what is possibly a stamping mechanism, along with an ink bottle and paperwork spread out. Caned chair at far end of table and two Windsor chairs on right. A safe on wheels is on the far right corner of the office. A couple more chairs are shown in partial view in front of the safe. An oil or kerosene lamp is hanging from the ceiling, with a decorative base and a shade. The legs of the table are turned. There is a framed document between two of the windows, with a small shelf in front with several more law books. A handwritten note originally attached to the back of the photo's frame contains this information, along with the provenance: "Law Office of George Louis Hemenway, Hopkinton, Massachusetts, Main street. Building destroyed by fire. The building also contained the Post Office, and I think the bank. Not sure but perhaps also a drug store."
