        "Origin: Written in the Avignon region of France in the first quarter of the fourteenth century (Thomas Aquinas, canonized in 1323, has been added to the calendar by a later hand, implying that the manuscript was written before that date), for the use of the Cistercian nuns at Val-Sainte, about 30 miles east of Avignon: the Office of the Dead is Cistercian use, as is the calendar (with St. Speusippus (17 January), St. Peter, Bishop (8 May), Bernard of Clairvaux (20 August), and Sequanus (19 September), as well as the Cistercian commemorations on 11 January, 20 May, and 18 September). An original entry on 22 April records the 1278 death of one Abbess Blanche of the convent at Val-Sainte: \"Anno domini M.CC.lxx.viii. obii [sic. obit] domina blancha abatissa vallis sancte.\""
