Document source description
To make this chalice, Antonio Lopez probably worked from a drawn or printed design. The vessel features seraphim, the highest order of angels, interspersed with scrolling vignettes of scenes from Christ’s suffering and death. The etched “Sobrado” on the base suggests that the chalice may have once been used to celebrate Catholic Mass at the Cistercian abbey church of Sobrado in northwest Spain.
