This Yohei III dining bowl with an everted rim has a glaze identified in its box lid inscription as <em>hisoku </em>(C. <em>mise</em>), or “mysterious color.” This name typically refers specifically to a type of high-quality, green-glazed ceramic produced in the ninth and tenth centuries at the Yue kilns in China’s Zhejiang Province as tribute ware for the imperial family.
