Source Description

Major N. C. Martelli was a political agent, one of the officials who helped maintain British control over the princely Indian states through diplomacy, consultation, and monitoring. This camp may have been portable housing for his extensive travels, or a hunting camp occupied during leisure time. Martelli volunteered for a British organization dedicated to supplying and training female medical professionals to treat Indian women. The women pictured may be Martelli’s family, guests, or medical personnel involved with that project.
