Source Description

Venice was an important center for the production of woodcuts during the 1500s. Titian (1488-1576), the celebrated Venetian painter, exerted tremendous influence on the graphic arts. His vibrant, monumental woodcut designs inspired generations of artists, including Giuseppe Scolari, who is known today only through a handful of woodcuts. The dramatic composition and the bold linear treatment are characteristic of Scolari's style.
