Following the example of Yozo Hamaguchi and his student Kazuhisa Honda, contemporary Japanese artists continue to utilize mezzotint. Printmakers exploit the ability of the technique to produce velvety blacks and an unlimited variety of tones, resulting in this haunting portrait.
