This is a Saga doll, a type of doll thought to have originated in 16th-century Saga, outside of Kyoto. The colors and patterns of the doll’s robe resemble the fashion of the latter part of the Momoyama period (1573–1615). The doll is a nodder, with its head carved separately; when its head moves, its tongue sticks out.
